Sustainable Fuels Summer School

DATE: 10 - 11 February 2026

Over the past decades, sustainable fuels have been investigated and developed to enable decarbonisation. Sustainable fuels play an essential role in energy transition by reducing greenhouse gas emissions, improving energy security, and utilising renewable resources to replace fossil fuels. Achieving large-scale adoption remains a challenge and requires a comprehensive understanding of the technological, environmental, economic, and social dimensions of sustainable fuels in order to create systems that are efficient, resilent, and economically viable for commercialisation.

The inaugural Australia-Indonesia Sustainable Fuels Summer School aims to:

  • Equip participants with a comprehensive understanding of sustainable fuels technologies across the value chain, from production and conversion to storage, distribution, safety, and their applications.

  • Identify key challenges and potential solutions in advancing sustainable fuels, including environmental impacts, resources requirements, policy frameworks, and social acceptance.

  • Provide opportunity for students and researchers to present their work, exchange knowledge, and engage with leading experts in the field.

  • Promote innovation, capacity building, and cross-sector collaboration to accelerate the adoption of sustainable fuels for a net-zero future

Throughout the program, participants will attend a mix of expert lectures, interactive sessions, case studies, poster presentations, and networking activities. The Summer School offers the chance to learn from international and regional leaders in sustainable fuels, develop an in-depth technical understanding of emerging technologies, and gain a broad appreciation of the techno-economic and policy opportunities driving the transition to a sustainable energy future.

Topics covered include but not limited to:

  • Biofuels technologies

  • E-fuels technologies

  • Green hydrogen: production, fuel cell, combustion, and implementation in Indonesia

  • Sustainable aviation fuels: technologies, opportunities, production and implementation

  • Fuel Cell technologies

  • Hydrogen and ammonia combustion technologies

  • Biomass-based fuels

  • Waste-based fuels

  • Techno-economics assessment workshop

  • Life cycle analysis workshop
